On Set: IT and Digitalization in Logistics

The significance of digitalization in logistics

This was the topic of the presentation we held for the logistics students of I. István Technikum in Székesfehérvár at the request of Junior Achievement Hungary. A recording of the presentation was made, which will be available during the Financial and Entrepreneurial Thematic Week (Pénz7) in the first week of March.

In the class, we explored the most exciting current developments in the industry, with particular attention to the role of digitalization and IT in the logistics sector. In light of the latest economic challenges and trends, the future of logistics is not only about efficiency but also sustainability. Digitalization and AI provide us with new tools as we consider the (re)greening of supply chains. At the same time, IT solutions, data analysis, robotics, and real-time tracking not only reduce costs but also contribute to a better customer experience.

We aimed to make each topic tangible through practical examples. We illustrated what an average day looks like for a freight forwarder, highlighting the factors that influence their work. We discussed economic challenges such as recession, risks posed by wars, and geopolitical instability, all of which significantly impact logistics. The industry must respond to these challenges to ensure the continuous and safe transportation of goods. Digital solutions can also assist in establishing effective risk management in these areas.

We highlighted the stagnation caused by the economic recession and presented various tools and solutions for maintaining cost-effectiveness and efficiency during these challenging times. Artificial intelligence can support sales and efficiency goals if applied correctly and tailored to maximize its benefits for our company. It’s not enough to merely write or design a sales campaign, blog, or other materials; they must always be adapted to the specific corporate objectives and personalized to meet individual needs.

We also discussed environmental and biological challenges. Today, transportation and freight account for approximately a quarter of global CO2 emissions, making the reduction of carbon footprints essential in the logistics industry. Failing to move towards sustainable logistics not only risks competitive disadvantages but also legal compliance. The good news, however, is that there are increasing tools available to assist us in this transition. We often say that logistics can be greened again. In the early days, the movement of goods and people did not result in harmful emissions. Transporters of old utilized the power of the wind, moving waters, and the strength of people or animals for freight. Today’s logistics professionals are equipped with modern tools such as renewable energy sources, alternative fuels, and efficiency-increasing measures to help reduce environmental impacts.

And while we are on the topic of the environment, we also discussed the biological risks associated with logistics. Global supply systems can transport not only goods and people but also pathogens, toxic, and polluting substances over long distances in a short time. These systems can unintentionally or deliberately be instruments of harm to human lives, assets, and economic processes. The risks are significant and real, and we must be prepared to minimize them. However, IT and digitalization also provide us with useful tools to mitigate biological risks.

We also talked about the dangers of cybercrime, which is increasing in proportion to digitalization. The logistics sector must prepare for digital attacks and develop appropriate defense measures. Secure IT systems ensure that sensitive data is protected.

Strengthening digital presence not only supports customer acquisition but also helps nurture customer relationships. The future of logistics, taking the above factors into account, will be able to respond to various challenges while maintaining competitiveness and sustainability.

It was exciting to speak on this topic in front of so many cameras and enthusiastic students. We hope to have provided information that they can utilize in their future careers! We would like to thank the JAM (Junior Achievement Hungary) team for the opportunity and for their dedicated and professional work that contributes to the knowledge of future logistics professionals.
